The Cretaquarium – Thalassokosmos in Gournes, about 15 km east of Heraklion, is a must for anyone who wants to experience the fascinating underwater life of the Mediterranean Sea up close. It is one of the most modern public aquariums in Europe, having opened in December 2005 (expansion 2008/09).
Take a look into the mysterious world of the Mediterranean! The Cretaquarium, one of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe, is home to more than 2,500 marine creatures from around 250 different species. In over 60 tanks, holding a total of 1.8 million liters of seawater, you can admire the diversity of the underwater world – from tiny seahorses to majestic sand tiger sharks.
The large tanks, where sea turtles, rays, and schools of colorful fish swim around, are particularly impressive. The deep-sea replicas, which reveal mysterious habitats and rare species, are equally fascinating.
This area is an absolute highlight for families: while children can observe the animals up close, adults gain exciting insights into research and marine conservation.
The VR area is another highlight. Thanks to advanced virtual reality technology, the visit becomes an interactive experience. Whether exploring beautifully colorful coral reefs or diving into the dark depths.
Children and adults experience the underwater world so vividly through realistic 3D animations, it feels as if they are diving in the ocean themselves. The combination of education, entertainment, and modern technology makes the VR area an unforgettable experience.
